How to Use the Stair Stringer Calculator

Start with total rise. This is the finished vertical distance from the lower walking surface to the upper walking surface, not the rough framing height and not the height of a deck ledger alone. If flooring, decking, tile, or a landing surface will be added before final inspection, include that finished thickness in the measurement. The important detail is that treads are one fewer than risers. The top landing is already a walking surface, so a 6-riser stair normally has 5 treads. Counting 6 treads for that layout would make the stair too long and would change the stringer angle and board length.
